As I sit on a plane, preparing for the next six days of celebrating the life of my father, I’m reading the first book of Gary; all the letters my father sent me, over a two year period, while serving a mission in Japan over 22 years ago. Didn’t have email then, how grateful I am. These pages have become holy to me. There is so much of me that I realize I received from my father. These are an inheritance more precious than gold! Opportunity- Edward Rowland SillThis I beheld, or dreamed it in a dream: There spread a cloud of dust along a plain; And underneath the cloud, or in it, raged a furious battle, and men yelled, and swords shocked upon swords and shields. A prince’s banner wavered, then staggered backward, hammered by foes. A craven hung along the battles edge and thought, "Had I a sword of keever steel - that blue blade that the king’s son bears- but this blunt thing ! He snapt and flung it from his hand, And lowering, crept away and left the field.Then came the kings son, wounded, sore bested, and weaponless, and saw the broken sword, hilt buried in the dry and trodden sand; and ran and snatched it, and with battle-shout lifted afresh, he heaved his enemy down, and saved a great cause that heroic day!Yes, Cameron “seize the day” -carpe diem, do it now! Get with the program , because you have the tools. You can do it - I believe in you! Love, DadI was praying yesterday, and the thought came to my mind, find his letters, frantically searched thinking, they were gone, but Jill had put them with the other items we call “precious.” I’ve not opened these lately, but I realize these 100+ pages are my father in written form and I can hear his voice as I read and remember the man he is. Yesterday, my dear father, who was not only the best of men on this earth but also my closest friend, fishing companion, counselor, advisor in all things spiritual, and lifelong mentor, unexpectedly passed away while undergoing hip replacement surgery. His sudden departure has left a profound void in my life, and I am deeply grieving his loss. Though I am heartbroken by my father’s passing, I find solace in knowing that he is now free from pain and suffering. He lived a life of integrity and love, and I take comfort in the belief that he has completed his earthly journey and returned to our Heavenly Father and is in the embrace of His Savior Jesus Christ. The card pictured below was the last one he gave me, a poignant reminder of his love and the special connection we had in our hearts. His legacy as a husband, father, brother, friend, comedian, missionary, and disciple of Jesus Christ will forever inspire me. Dad, your laughter, guidance, and unwavering love will be deeply missed. Until we meet again, I hope you know you've touched countless lives with your kindness, joy, and judgement free service!
