Orr and fellow members of the Paducah Garden Club sold plants and fertilizer Thursday at a luncheon, garden tour and plant sale at Hickory Hill, a wooded and meticulously landscaped area in Paducah's west end. The residents take pride in their lush lawns, beautiful begonias, gorgeous geraniums, magnificent magnolias, perky petunias and ravishing rhododendrons. ickets were sold to 204 pests, who had been advised to wear flat-heeled, comfortable shoes to stroll among the gardens of Lawrence and Lois Hammet, William and Lucy Paxton, Bill and Ginny Young and Betty Paxton. The fund-raiser finances various projects, including maintainance and upkeep of the Gazebo Garden at Paducah Public Library.
As a member of The Garden Club of America, the local club distributes water conservation education packets to school children. Months of preparation go into a garden tour, the hostesses said. "We decided last fall to do this," Ginny Young said. "You need to know that far ahead." She planted tulips and dwarf conifers, reworked a perennial bed, erected a fence, filled pots and planters with blooms and replaced a gravel -path with treated hardwood. The fence is open and airy.
"I left it open so I can enjoy the woods," Young said. Among the deciduous trees in the woods are wild buckeyes, a wild locust, and a Devil's Walking Stick. Inside the fence are forget-me-nots, Spanish bluebells, pansies, hosta, impatiens, ivy, rhododendron, roses and ferns. "Some day I'm going to make a walk through the woods," Young promised. The path would provide a direct route to Betty Paxton's Japanese garden.
In the meantime, flower fanciers were guided by signs leading to the end of the Hickory Hill lane, down Friedman Lane and around the comer to Minnich Avenue, to the Paxton residence. Landscape architect Bob Jones said the garden, which he designed and maintains, is an Americanized version of a Japanese garden. The Japanese elements are ornamental flat pebbles, maple trees and bamboo plants. At the bottom of the garden is a Scotch broom plant, its branches tipped with pale pink blossoms. A luncheon of chicken lemon mousse, com muffins and dessert tarts Was served in Lucy Paxton's garden, which was approached by a rustic bridge.
