Sniper kills Mohawk, second found dead BY MIKE HILL ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER ST. REGIS INDIAN RESERVATION, N.Y. Sniper fire killed one Mohawk Indian on Tuesday and a second man was found shot to death, the first two fatalities during a 9-month-old dispute over casino gambling on their reservation. The reservation was sealed off at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, officials said.

The highway leading into the reservation was closed off to reporters, as well. as residents trying to enter. The first victim, Matthew Pyke, 22, was shot while he was walking in the St. Regis Mohawk Indian Reservation, in Snye, Quebec, during an early morning gun battle between rival factions. A spokesman for the pro-gambling Warrior Society, who refused to give his name, said a Warrior was also killed during a gun battle.

Quebec provincial police later confirmed the second man was shot to death near where Pyke was found. Constable Pierre Lemarbre did not identify the man but said he. was a Mohawk in his 30s. Anti-gamblers blamed the reservation's self-appointed security force for the first slaying and also pointed a finger of responsibility at Gov. Mario Cuomo, who they said has let the situation get out of control.

Pyke died at Alice Hyde Hospital in Malone after emergency surgery, said Joyce Conto, an emergency room staffer. He was shot, possibly twice, in the lower left part of his back, she said. Joe Lazore, who accompanied Pyke to the hospital, said he was walking alongside Pyke when the shooting occurred. Lazore said the shots came from a wooded area on the American side of the reservation near the Salmon River. 'Most Wanted' List gets five life terms BY TOM CANAVAN ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER ELIZABETH, N.J.

A judge Tuesday rejected John E. List's plea for forgiveness, and ordered the former Sunday school teacher imprisoned for life, saying the voices of his slaughtered family were demanding justice. "For what he did to his wife, his mother, his daughter, his two sons and for how he traumatized an entire community, (the) defendant should have no hope of breathing the free air that graces the lives of law abiding citizens," said Superior Court Judge William Wertheimer. The judge sentenced List, 64, to the maximum five consecutive life sentences. List was convicted April 12 of murdering his wife, Helen, 46; mother Alma, 84; daughter, Patricia, 16; and sons John, 15, and Frederick, 13, in 1971 in their 18- room mansion in Westfield, 25 miles from New York City.

"John Emil List is without remorse and without Wertheimer said. "After 18 years, 5 months and 22 days, it is now time for the voices of Helen, Alma, Patricia, Frederick and John F. List to rise from the grave, for it is the criminal justice system, through its trial courts, that speaks for all victims of As the judge left, spectators who packed the courtroom broke into applause. List, who eluded authorities for 18 years before a television show led to his capture in Virginia in June, must serve 14 years and 11 months of each life sentence. There was no death penalty in New Jersey at the time of the killings.

"I wish to inform the court I remain truly sorry for the tragic events of 1971," List said in his first public statement on the slayings.
